The Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and Other Stories

Read by Nicholas Boulton

unabridged

Praised by Chekhov as his favourite writer, Nikolai Leskov occupies a unique place in Russian literature. His original stories often seem like folk-tales, their larger-than-life characters including soldiers, Tsars, priests and gypsies. Leskov’s storytelling, simple in its style, combines a deep religious spirit with comic absurdity.

The Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Leskov’s best-known work, is a realist account of a young woman who escapes from her loveless marriage through adultery, leading to violence and murder. This audiobook collection of six stories also includes The Sealed Angel, The Steel Flea, The Toupée Artist, The Sentry and On the Edge of the World.

Nicholas Boulton’s versatile voice is on fine display in this production of several works by the Russian author Nikolai Leskov. Although he is not as well known as Dostoevsky or Tolstoy, Leskov is a major literary figure who was Chekhov’s favorite author. These stories reveal human nature in all of its splendor and sordidness. The title work is Leskov’s best known work and was even the basis for an opera by Shostakovich. Over the years Boulton has distinguished himself with his narrations of Russian literature. He never disappoints. His pacing, enunciation, and inflection are outstanding. He gives subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, voices to various characters and makes any production he performs a delight.
